Decorating a Nursery- From JPMA

Decorating your nursery is one of the most exciting aspects of preparing for baby. It is important to keep safety in mind when you are setting up and furnishing your nursery. Here are some helpful tips:

• Your crib should be placed away from windows, draperies, blinds or wall-mounted decorative accessories with long cords.
• Toys and other pillow-like items should not be placed in the crib with babies under 1 year of age. These items can cause suffocation risks.
• Products such as fluffy blankets, comforters, pillows, pillow-like bumpers and stuffed animals should be removed from the crib and should be used for decoration only.
• If you choose to use bumper pads, avoid those that are pillow-like and once baby can stand, remove them from the crib.
• Select bumper pads that fit around the entire crib and tie or snap securely into place.
• Use bumper pads only until the child can pull up to a standing position. Then remove them so baby cannot use the pads to climb out of the crib.
• Mobiles should also be removed when baby can pull himself or herself up.
• Remove quilts and other bedding before putting baby to bed.
• Consider hanging your quilt or decorative blanket on the wall as art.
• Consider utilizing the crib blanket and pillows with your rocker or glider. Both can come in handy during late night feedings or story time to cover mom's legs or use to prop up mom's arm while nursing.
